Brighton Inshore Fishing - Catch report 21st September 2026

Been a while since I've been able to sail thanks to wind. Been making the most of the time with plenty of shore guiding, as I still keep my guides and ghillies insurance policy running for exactly these situations. Keeps the wolves from the door at least, although less lucrative than the boat mostly.

A big problem with not having sailed is what changes have happened. Big seas have certainly dispersed the bait shoals locally, but squid are now there in large numbers, and squid do attract larger bass, keen on an easy meal. So we went and fished where squid live for first sailing.

11 bass landed, just one undersized, and plenty of squid as top ups.

Sadly, with clear seas and bright sun, as the day went on so the fishing deteriorated

Reasonable squid fishing with a few cuttle 2nd sailing, but no bass. Paul did managed a thornback on a squid jig though. That's a first for BIF1.

3rd sailing, five bass but just one for the table, a few squid, but a fair few cuttlefish

I'm not too surprised, with the tiny tides, and I do expect everything to pick up as the tides increase in height and coefficients.
