Brighton Inshore Fishing - Catch report 25th September 2026

Very exciting times just now. There is a perfect storm of food items locally. Squid are now abundant and already getting quite large. spratt balls are appearing under the boat with regularity. And as if that wasn't enough, there is as much plankton in the water as I have ever seen. Flying fish in Cornwall? Well Ray Burns spotted a whole shoal leaving the water over towards Anchor lump this morning. I'm half expecting a basking shark next.

As for the fishing, that too is a lot better than during that pesky heat wave. First sailing, four rods on board. We came out into a horrible SE swell, which was very unexpected but I'm starting to get used to fishing them. Long swells, more akin to the Indian Ocean. Unfortunately the sort of swells that can trigger sea sickness, and two fell to it today. But the fishing was good, and that always gets rid of illness

10 bass landed, 8 killed. squid and cuttle top ups.

2nd sailing, a bit of a foodie gathering with two non anglers. No brainer. This session was oriented towards squid and cuttle, and we caught shed loads. plus 2 bass added

Final sailing, four rods. All very capable anglers. What to do. With the session down to low tide, I decided to go 2 hours on the bass, final hour squid and cuttle. Well, the bass didn't like that idea. And when we found them, they kept smashing the surface lures with so much force, we couldn't really leave them. 16 bass landed. 8 killed due to my policy of remaining with the 2 bass limit, a pathetic attempt to continue the recovery.
