Out with new clients Chris and Erik, and frequent flyer Ian, and even managed to get my co-skipper and BIF partner Capt Bruce out on the water. A full boat, with no idea what we were going to find. After having fished mid channel on my friends charter boat "Proteus" (a big blythe catamaran) where we found the fish suddenly very scarce, I wasnt expecting too much. And not too much is pretty much what we got.

A run along all the rock patches produced a solitary whiting on a slow jig. A small inshore wreck produced a couple of jumbo pout. Which meant we were heading for the Gurnard sands. Here, there was action, but with an ever increasing Northerly wind, and swells picking up, I didnt want to stay too long, so we headed inshore to try an optimistic drag for plaice. A fortnigh too early I suspect. Zero plaice, and with the fishing quite poor, my guys were happy for a shorter trip to save the pennies for a future date. Unlikely Erik will be back so soon, as he is a pro skipper on the Ebro Delta, where he chases Blue fin tuna from March to November. Indeed, I loved what he had to say about shore fishing on the Delta... Thoughts of a winter tour over that way, have been triggered in my head..

With the fishing poor, I will not announce any future sailings on BIF1 until we have some decent reliable fishing to take you to. Likely to start with the plaice on isomes, which is a lovely way to spend a few hours. Quite likely to revert to two four hour sailings a day when this comes to be, as four hours plaicing is probably the right length of time. Six hours, it might become repetitive.
