Brighton Inshore Fishing - Catch report 25th June 2025

A day that suggested flat seas, so of course, Neptune protected his stock in the morning by ensuring I was on a speeding awareness course... He is so crafty. But the seas were bigger than expected anyhow, even at lunchtime, so I cancelled a proposed bass sailing at 1300. Which just left the first Cephalopod venture of the year...

The squid are still about two months away, but what is there in ever greater numbers, as proven by all the wounds in the shads on recent sailings, is cuttlefish. Now, before I discovered Portugal (well, I guess someone done that a few thousand years ago...) I dont think I would have been bothered with them. But having tasted them in the restaurants of Olhao, in a fine cornflower coating, with a garlic mayonnaise dip, and plenty of fresh lemons to squeeze... Well, to wake up my Squid facebook group, I proposed a cuttlefish trip. And it sold out quickly.

The actual fishing was straightforward. Everyone caught. A few crackers. A few smalls. A lot of laughs. A lot of ink. And a lot of recipe ideas discussed as we cracked on. It wasnt the craziness of the squid. I doubt if we will see a hundred cuttle an hour ever. But we did land a very respectable 16, and dropped a few as well. Definitely one to repeat while I have nothing to do with low tide slacks. If you are interested in squid or cuttle fishing, both afloat and ashore, and would like to join on these trips, simply text the word SQUID and YOUR NAME to 07970 112774 to be added to the whatsapp group where these trips are offered.
