Fish of the day for Gary

Just the one sailing today, rejoined by Marky, who bought his brother Gary along, and Dan, another BIF1 virgin. The initial period had to be all about bass. We gunned down to the mark, on a mirror calm sea with the sun yet to rise, and I have to say I was both anxious and a little exhilarated. If I could find the big shoal again, I knew my guys would have some good sport. I set up the first drift, using the location of the shoal at the same state of tide the previous day as a guide. A long drift, we got to the end of it with zero bass spotted. My anxiety rose...

When bass attack...

Next drift, I sectioned a little further North. Bingo. Half way down the drift and roughly on the line I would expect, a full blown bass attack drifted onto the screen. And seconds later the guys rods hooped over, one at a time. A huge weight lifted from my shoulders. Big smiles were all around me. But the shoal moved from the excitement of the extraction. I found it again three drifts later, when the biggest smile was on Gary's face, with a 4lb plus fish showing to him how hard bass scrap.

More hunting around. I thought I had found a small patch, but they turned out to be bream, as Dan proved catching one on the HTO Boogie. I even managed a small plaice on an HTO MIghty minnow... ! We finished up with I think 8 fish, before the prospects became diminished by receding tide strength, and uber finicky fish. A change was required. "Who wants to go plaice fishing?" I asked. A big smile slashed Marky's face in two...

Marky likes his plaice fishing. And plaice clearly liked Marky. We managed about fifteen plaice in the remainder of the session, with them feeding much harder than we have recently experienced, possibly as a result of the receding green may rotten water. And Mikey had the biggest share by far. But everybody caught. I think Dan was particularly impressed with the results from such simplistic fishing. I do believe, as a relative newcomer to sea fishing, that he has been caught by the curse of the internet, and become a victim of angling consumer marketing. But its not too late. I fully intend to throw him a line (Nanofil of course) and haul him from the pit over future trips...
