Brighton Inshore Fishing - Catch report 24th June 2018

Fish of the day... sadly, not a CLOVEN HOOF rum contender...

Out with three frequent flyers for an 0500 sailing. Marky, Damo and Mackie. We agreed, with the tide the way it was, to go and fish for bass for half the session, and then move on to the plaice. And it was quite a good plan. Well, about half right, I should say. The bass were happy to play. A fish around the 2.5lb mark bumped up Marky's PB, although I fully suspect that will be blown completely out of the water very soon. Plenty of smaller fish around. I pointed out that the fly will often outfish the shad, and popped out the #10 gear to take half a dozen quite quickly, including one, which I shall claim as fish of the day.

Then onto the plaice. Well, very few plaice. Gurnards, no problem. A smattering of mackerel, no problem. Plaice, simply did not want to play. A big upset really as conditions were quite good. But thats the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. Plaice have a reputation as being an easy fish to catch. And when they have mood to feed, they can be ravenous. But just as often they can be tight mouthed, or curious but not committed. Especially when lure fishing for them. You know when this is happening, by the amount that drop off on the way to the surface. And yet another session, perhaps the following session, they might be all about savage takes and being deeply hooked. Fishing truly is, a funny old game somtetimes...
