Just two sailings today. Kind of happy for it as I didnt have to set the alarm for 0345 for the first time in a while. Indeed, first sailing was at 1400 which meant I could catch up on admin, banking, hygiene, that kind of thing...
First up, was Stan, Kate, Chris and Nick. We headed out, and got into it. I had warned that numbers might be low, but quality would be good. And that is pretty much how it turned out. The guys soon had the technique nailed, and fish began to fall. Not loads, I counted 7 I think. But sizes were a little down on previous sailings, with just two fish for the table. Stan has his own boat in Newhaven, and I hope to hear of him catching on ground he previously had not, as a result of this session. I really enjoyed it. Happy hearts. If the word was rammed with people like this, war would never be known about...
As I returned and mounted the dock, there was a man waiting for me. I sorted out the guys fish, and said farewell, and then interacted with the man. I was actually expecting a bollocking, as apparently my wash upset the driver of the 76 meter. 1600 tonne dredger, SPLIT III, currently digging out the mud in the marina fareway... You live and learn. I would never have imagined my 6.7m, uber light little vessel could have such an affect on the monster, that they would be upset and contacting marina control. If I ever meet the QEII at sea, I will be sure to slow down... Anyhow. Back to the man. Laurent wasnt waiting to tell me off, but to talk bass. It turns out he is visiting Brighton from Belgium, where he is a commercial rod and line bass angler, and also president of a bass sport fishing society out there. I invited him along to join my business partner Bruce for the evening session.
And what an eyeopener for him. Considerably different techniques than he uses to catch bass in Belgium. And as if just for him, we began to hit bigger fish. Again not loads, but enough, including one proper one which screamed around for a while to get him thinking... His fishing back home is very different however. Wrecks, from anchor, in screaming tides... However, I am sure there will be something for him to take back with him. I hope to bump into him again tomorrow. Maybe I will go back and check it out with him...
