If only we didnt have wind... Today showed us a great example of how good the fishing is out there. And has been since September. But winds are doing a far better job of protecting the bass shoals than any government bureau. With me for this mornings sailing, three returnee's, Mark D, Mark P and Gavin, plus new to BIF1, Alan. Heading out into a very big swell, as the wind had been blowing Southerly for much of the night. Looking back at shore, it looked more the landscape of Madeira, with fog banks over the south downs pretending to be ancient volcanoes.

The wind now though, was from the North, and fighting the swells. Eventually the wind began winning, and waves began flattening. Conditions just kept getting better. Heading out to the grounds where the whiting live, It only took a short drift to realise that only a few fish were there. And very few whiting marking on the sonar either. Hunting time.

Happily we found some quite quickly, and with no other boats around, the shoal remained in position for pretty much the rest of the trip. we went through the 20 marker, and hit max kill, and carried on until 28 bass had crossed the gunnel. Alan decided, once he had a brace, to see what the squid fishing was like. The squid fishing was also very good and he had a good haul to take home, for his daughter as squid are her favourite food.
2nd sailing, and winds had dropped even further. For 2 hours, the last of the ebb tide, we fished in flat calm. The fish had moved again, but Neptune had a soft moment and allowed some bait fish to be chased to the surface. This was instantly spotted by birds, and I instantly spotted the birds spotting the fish. End result, 31 bass landed, max kill, plus squid. And Loz, Liam and Nick, all returning, plus Beddi, new to BIF1, all left with a brace (squid also for Liam and Loz) and a big smile. A most excellent day afloat. Now lets see what the rest of the week brings. I do still have a space on the Monday 1200 sailing if anyone wants on.
