Brighton Inshore Fishing - Catch report 23rd July 2025

A long day. I wasn't too sure about the first sailing, as swell forecasts suggested still quite lumpy, but with zero wind and the swells having been created by a North Westerly wind, which tends to create a longer, lazier swell, I suggested to Mark. Steve, Mose and Richard that we give it a go. And a go was given. With seas moderating quickly it was the right decision. But the fish... The fish were hard work. Finally, I found a narrow seam of them, all 44cm, and we landed 7, with five killed for the table. A very near miss though.

Next, Kas was back, and Nick with his two lads Andrew and Gabriel. Another hard session, but somehow both boys managed the only two keeper bass, from a total of ten, plus bonus mackerel. A fun trip, but so so hard. The two boys both listened to advice regarding casting though, and were hitting some good distances, as a bonus.

3rd sailing with Ricardo, Ramazan, Mark and of course Kas, was cut short to 2 hours due to a very heavy storm accompanied by squally winds. Not good for a small boat such as mine. In that time, we found fish again, but just the one fish killed for the table, and a tidy one at 55cm. This was Ricardo's first bass. What a way to start!! He was made up, and we were all made up for him.

And for the first time this year, a fourth sailing. This a collaboration with "The Kraken Charters" to check on the progress of size and numbers of squid and cuttle fish. Well, both are currently still small. Just six cuttlefish on this trip, and two small squid. Although 3 weeks earlier than last year, already I am getting the feeling, we will not see the crazy numbers we did last year. I stand, readily and happily, to be corrected. Time will tell. We will certainly be doing more trips, so regular readers will also be able to tell.
