First sailing was supposed to have been accompanied by very light Northerly winds. The first thing that was apparent on emerging from fishyrob HQ was that there was in fact a screaming northerly wind. This brings back the whole jinx thing. Chris, normally a 1030 sailor, made a determined effort to get down for the first sailing, bringing his friend Bill along, having recently witnessed the first sailing people leaving with plenty of fish, whilst 2nd sailings either shortened by weather or a struggle to find fish. Joining these boys from Essex, more local regulars Dave and David. The jinx? Wind was due to drop for the 2nd sailing today.
Why is it important? why not just stay in tight with a northerly? This year, my most reliable fishing has been on the 2 mile line, and this wind would not let us out there. We ran around a lot of closer marks but despite best efforts by the guys, just six fish were landed, and none were big enough for planned BBQ shenanigans... Burgers again guys...
2nd sailing, and this was a last minute re-book, as the planned 6 hour back to back session was unlikely with stiff SW breeze forecast for the afternoon. So, Steve, James, Mark and David all got to come and play at unexpected short notice. And.... the wind dropped exactly as forecast.
This enabled me to get to the spots a bit further offshore that I wanted to, and we nicked a few fish from all of them. Still not super fast action, but enough to keep expectation alive. 15 bass landed, with a brace a piece for all but Mark, who does not eat fish. Nice conditions, with a warm sun. A far cry from the brutally cold first hour of the first sailing. Happy anglers. And a very happy skipper? Why? well, I decided that for the first cod of the 2024 late summer season I would award a pair of polarised Shimano sunglasses. And I am now the proud owner as it was my hook it came to. First few are always small and skinny. But in the next two weeks, we will find out what sizes we will be actually getting and perhaps an idea of numbers also.
